Shohei Ohtani has mesmerized the baseball world with his unprecedented feats.
While recovering from elbow surgery in 2023, Ohtani still shined as a hitter, making history as the first Major League Baseball player to hit at least 50 home runs and steal 50 bases in a single season.
His accomplishments are undeniable, and shortly after the Los Angeles Dodgers secured their 11th NL West title in 12 seasons, Ohtani’s father, Toru Ohtani, penned an open letter to his son in Sponichi, a Japanese publication with nearly 80,000 followers on X.
“Congratulations on winning the division! This is your first opportunity to compete for a championship in the Majors,” the first paragraph of the letter translates to.
Ohtani has yet to play in the postseason, as the Los Angeles Angels failed to qualify during his time with them.
Otani’s father also mentioned his son’s wife, Mamiko, and credited her for much of Ohtani’s success.
“This year, you achieved a major milestone by marrying Mamiko, and I can tell you’re playing baseball with more calmness now.
“When we first heard about your marriage last December, we were so surprised. Before, I’d visit your games, chat briefly, and then leave. But after you got married this season, you invited us for tea, and we spent more time together, which made me happy as a father.
“I feel like you’re more focused during games since you got married. You seem to have softened and smoothed your sharp edges.”
Otani’s father shared moments from the season’s ups and downs.
“In early August, our whole family watched three games at Dodger Stadium. The suite you reserved for us on the fifth level was amazing, with a great view.
“You got a hit as soon as we arrived, but afterward, your performance dipped, and you didn’t get any more hits. I worried you’d start calling me a bad luck charm.”
